Sexual Health: STI Prevention, Screening, and Treatment

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can affect anyone sexually active. Regular STI screenings lead to early detection when infections are easier to treat. Early detection and treatment also prevent the infection from progressing and becoming more serious. Our experienced and caring providers at Capital Women's Care Division 64 in Silver Spring, Rockville, & Laurel, MD, offer STI screening and treatment.

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)

Sexually transmitted infections, previously referred to as sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), are contracted through skin-to-skin sexual contact or sexual intercourse. Examples of STIs include:

  • Herpes
  • Gonorrhea
  • Chlamydia
  • Genital warts
  • Trichomoniasis
  • Hepatitis B
  • Syphilis
  • HIV

STI Prevention

Several precautions can be taken to reduce the risk of contracting a sexually transmitted infection. The best method for STI prevention is abstaining from sexual activity. For sexually active individuals, some steps that can be taken to prevent STIs include:

  • Using condoms
  • Getting vaccinated for Hep B and HPV
  • Avoiding sexual activities that break the skin
  • Limiting the number of sexual partners
  • Mutual monogamy with one partner

STI Screening

Not all STIs are associated with obvious symptoms so it is possible to contract an infection and not realize it. That is why it is so important to undergo STI screening or testing regularly if you are sexually active. The skilled providers at our OB/GYN offices in Silver Spring, Rockville, & Laurel, MD, offer STI screening. Depending on the type of test needed, screening could include bloodwork, a urine sample, a saliva swab from inside the mouth or throat, and swabs of the genitals, sores, or discharge.

STI Treatment

Many sexually transmitted infections can be effectively treated with prescription antibiotics or another type of medication. It is important to continue taking any medication until it is gone or as instructed by your doctor. It can be tempting to stop taking medication if symptoms have gone away, but finishing helps ensure the infection is eliminated.

We are here to help you stay healthy and safe by providing STI screening and treatment, as well as guidance on STI prevention. Contact Capital Women's Care Division 64 in Silver Spring, Rockville, & Laurel, MD, for STI screening by calling (301) 468-0073.
